At Trailside we hold true to the belief that each child is unique in temperament, learning style and ability! We recognize and embrace this understanding by providing an environment that promotes learning as fun and engaging for all children. We believe that play and laughter are synonymous with learning!!!
It is our belief that children learn best when provided with an environment that includes the child’s interests and opportunities for independent discovery and exploration (Piaget). Many discoveries are made and skills developed through play in the areas of cooking, music, creative dramatics, science, block, library and writing centers. Teachers are an important part of this learning process when they guide children to challenge themselves beyond what they already know and provide the environment in which to do so (Vygotsky). Children use play for self-teaching!! The children use play through situations very much like an adult thinks through a situation (Erikson).
The environment and curriculum is developed by the teacher’s careful observation of children’s interests and abilities, knowledge about each child’s family including their cultural backgrounds, beliefs and values along with the use of professional assessment and environmental tools. Qualified Early Childhood Staff design age appropriate activities in accordance with the R.I. Early Learning Development Standards (www.rields.com).
Toddler and Pre-School families receive quarterly portfolios documenting each area of their child’s development. Pre-K families receive bi-annual portfolios documenting each area of their child’s development.
It is important to us here at Trailside that we support children’s emotional well being and provide them with a safe and secure environment As trained professionals, the staff has a clear knowledge of each stage of child development. The teachers, as role models, encourage pro-social behaviors by showing respect and appreciation for all differences among children. Teachers show great patience and understanding in guiding negative behaviors through the use of positive and nurturing approaches. By creating an environment that provides for individual choices among children and respect for those choices, we are saying to children that they are important. When we provide materials and equipment that is well maintained and age appropriate we are saying that we care that they are challenged but safe. When children are responded to immediately and with concern and kindness, and when they are listened to by teachers who show genuine interest in their concerns and conversations, we are saying that they are very important in their environment. They make a difference!!!
